Despicable Me leaves Pixar - any Pixar I have ever seen - in the dust.

Not everyone agrees, of course - several featured reviews on Rotten Tomatoes found it formulaic, not funny, even annoying.

There's a word for those people, of course, and that word is "wrong". (It's a technical term. I learned it in my film crit class.)
I just think that a kids movie with art that echos Terry Gilliam's python animations, Ralph Steadman and Gerry Scarfe, but is also actually funny, not cynical or dismissive, actually something that makes sense to both kids and adults...that's really something. It's a huge accomplishment.

As is often the case, the secondary characters (Dr. Nefario, Mr. Perkins the loan officer) are more interesting envisioned than the main characters. (I think of this as the Dark Crystal problem.

Besides, this movie caused me to utter a phrase that, not only did I never expect to say, but one that has never before been recorded on the internet.

And apparently, no photos. I just watched this video at NYTimes, and the thing that really grabbed me about it - you know, aside from the main point, which is just totally up my alley - was the fabulous, perfect messy androgenous yet pretty, 80s yet somehow original, not trying-too-hard hairstyle. NO stills that I have found on the web capture it - you have to see it in motion.

My hair will need to grow out before it can become like this - I gave myself a trim the other night, which resulted in a 80s hipster bicolor bilevel...by accident.

(Note: If you have Wahl hair clippers, you should be aware that the 'left and right ear taper' attachments leave you with hair somewhere in length between "Jesus Lord!" and "oh fuck.")

Anyway, this is some awesome hair.

heard this a couple of days ago, but didn't really get the terrificness of the lyrics until hearing it again in the radio today.

they especially stand out in a radio landscape where Kid Rock has a big hit rhyming the word "things" with the word, um, "things."
